Fad Diets What??!!

ree

Its hard to believe but yes there are such things as fad diets and most are very popular. I am sure you will recognize a few that will be listed here. These diets are fad diets because they are not replicable in their results, or they over only short term or no health benefits at all. Mind blowing right?? Especially since the world seems to be pushing these and not the ones that offer actual health benefits and have many studies to back up the science. Do you get tired of the endless restrictions of these diets offer? Don't know what to eat on these diets? Come over to the sunny side of eating.

Keto isn't a fad?

Yes, keto is a fad diet, this diet only offers minimal weight loss for a short period of time and doesn't offer any other health benefits to most people who use it. Why? because its low in fiber and plant based foods, its restrictive, and its very high in fats. There is only one study where the keto diet has shown to be beneficial and that is in patients with seizures, it did help to control their seizures. Unfortunately, that is the only benefit to the keto diet. This diet will leave you searching for a new diet in a short period of time because weight loss will stop and labs will be altered.

Fad for Paleo?

Yes, Paleo is also another fad diet, they say its good to eat like a caveman like our ancestors did. However, they do not take into account that our ancestors had a more diverse gut or microbioda, also their foods were not genetically modified, and soil depletion wasn't an issue. While this diet does offer some benefits because it does offer more plant based food options, it still offer animal based products and doesn't use organics. So benefits for this diet are also minimal and will leave you wanting to try something new in a short period of time.

Juicing, yup I said it?

Yes, juicing is also a fad diet, as this will offer weight loss for a short period of time while you only drink juice and yes you can get organic juices. However, while this may sound like a good option because they are derived from fresh fruits and vegetables. However, when you make juice you are striping away the fiber in the fruit or vegetables and are just left with sugar. While this diet may offer minimal health benefits for a short period of time it will leave you looking for a new diet shortly.

Listed above are only three of the many fad diets out there. After all who could forget the Southbeach diet, Atkins, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, and I can go on and on and on until the list is rather exhaustive. Do you want a diet that is easy to manage, has lots of flavor and variety, and really isn't restrictive. Have you ever seen people that seem to eat and eat and don't seem to gain weight while your over here just looking at a doughnut the wrong way and gain 10 pounds. Yup, this was me too, until I changed my way of thinking, eating, rest, hydration and more. Will a diverse high fiber whole food plant food diet, whole food plant based diet or a semi modified whole food plant based diet the sky is pretty much the limit of what you can eat. No more counting calories, no more watching what you eat because it contain this ingredient and that ingredient, and its super easy to meal plan if you are into meal planning. There are just a few things to keep in mind. First you will want to start low and slow when starting out decreasing red meat, then fish, then chicken then down to very little meat or no meat depending on which one you are following. For me I went with 95% whole food diet to 10% everything else. This includes maybe one day a week of meat at lunch or dinner, as well a olive oil for cooking. Other than that all overly processed, overly refined foods are gone. Minimally processed food are alright but should be limited. All this information and more can be found in those books that I recommended in my last blog. If you are considering this lifestyle I highly recommend the reads they are great. I also found a new book that is also pretty good its called The Plant based Solution by Joel K Kahn M.D. This book can also be found on Amazon and other places on the internet. As always, always consult you physician prior to starting anything new. With this type of lifestyle in combinations with proper rest, exercise, and hydration - diseases and disorders can be reversed and more.
